Reframing (from meeting handout):
Reframing is a Tool to use when you want to stop a negative or unwanted behavior. There is a positive intention behind
everything we do, even if what we're doing seems negative or not helpful to us. In other words, every one of our behaviors
gets us something we want, or benefits us in some way.
To stop a behavior that on the one hand is getting you some benefit you want, but on the other hand is preventing you from
reaching your weight goals, try this Reframing process:
-What behavior do you want to change?
-What does this behavior get for you? (What is the positive outcome?)
-How else can you get that benefit? (List as many ways as possible and some of the ideas can be activities)
-Which of these new behaviors will you try? (Choose at least 3)
If you were competing for a gold medal in the Eating Olympics, which category would you choose?
-Most buttered popcorn eaten while watching T.V.
-Most chips and dip consumed at a party
-Quickest inhaling of Chocolate Chip cookies fresh out of the oven
-Best snacking after work or school
-Most hot dogs eaten at a baseball game
-Most candy eaten at the movie theaters
These "Eating Olympics" are habits that we have formed for one reason or another. Many of us are speed eaters out
of habit or choice and this fast eating doesn't give us a chance to realize that we are inhaling our food.
Can eating be recreational?
What are the reasons behind your speed or habit eating?
